Lots of times the check engine light comes on because the gas cap is not on properly. It causes a vapor lock. If that is the case, once the cap is on correctly it might take a few times of driving and shutting off the engine for it to clear itself.

I got a new gas cap. It stayed off for a while but came back on again. There is a leak in the evaporation valve.
