Should We Use the Military More for Disasters

Suddenly, after Louisiana’s fiasco at disaster relief, everyone wants to make the military the 911 call. I’m not terribly enthusiastic about that. That kind of power in the wrong hands could be bad.

I was watching Fox News tonight and Charles Krauthammer offered a suggestion that might work. His idea is, the President can authorize the military to take over disaster relief only in extreme circumstances, yet to be defined, and that authority would only last two weeks. He says it could only be extended by congress approving of same.

I find that a little more encouraging, but I’m still uneasy about it. I rather think the military should be defending the country rather than tracking hurricanes.
