Friday Flower Blogging

060410brook.jpg

My babbling brook is down to a trickle. You can see the dark brown where the water was since last August. The narrow rusty water is where it is flowing now. It called for rain from Thursday through Sunday and we haven't gotten any yet. It is 92 degrees and very humid. I weeded this morning. I thought I'd weed the east side before the sun got over the trees. I went from the back to the steps and the sun popped around. I head back to the south side which is shaded until about 11:30. I weed around the back and then did the west side until about 11:30 and I was losing my shade. I got a shower to cool off and then Ida, My neighbor came to the door with some produce. She asked if I wanted any plantains. I've had some of my Puerto Rican friends that have made them but I have never cooked them myself. Ida belongs to a co-op and they deliver fresh produce to her door every Friday. She gave me two containers of cherry tomatoes, a bunch of bananas, a package of hot dog rolls, a package of hamburger rolls and a loaf of sliced Italian bread along with the plantains. I looked them up on the internet and the easiest recipe is to wait until they are almost black, slice, and fry them in oil. Eat while hot. They cannot be reheated. According to the recipe they are sweet like sweet potatoes.

Hi karol,

How beautiful the Asiatic Lillies are. That was a nice treat waiting for you when you arrived in MD. Both of your yards are lovely, so you get surprises in both yards when you go between your homes. HOWEVER, let's hope your NJ home sells very soon and you won't have to do all that driving and caring for two homes, two yards, etc. I hope the latest lady that looked at your house fell in love with it and wants to call it home. We will cheer when that day comes.

I just had to tell you how pretty the lillies were. You know your flowers so well and you have a green thumb that eventually brings out the beauty in your plants. Have a great weekend. Love, Ruth

If your plantains are very green, you can also make mariquitas. They are just like potato chips. You slice them very thin and fry in some peanut oil....add some salt and enjoy! I use a potato peeler to cut them thin. The hardest part will to be to peel them. Or like you said, you can wait until they are black, and fry them to make tostones.

Maybe Sonia can give you other recipes too!
