I looked out this morning and it's 10 degrees. Good Grief! Will this winter ever end? The Arctic Vortex has moved in and more snow is forecast for Sunday. I hope it will be Sunday night so people can attend church. Offering has been down because people don't come out in bad weather. Fuel cost have been up because of the cold weather and prices are up.

I awoke to more snow. It snowed all morning but only got a quarter inch which didn't last long. It was kind of neat laying on the azalea leaves looking like white flowers.

I went to the church to do some computer work and then helped with folding the newsletter before going to Bible Study.

When I walked Sparky, it was sunny but a cold wind blowing.

I did some wash and not much else. I put a flowerpot planter out front by my fence as I saw large tire marks in my flower bed. I hope the crocuses were not crushed. It was probably someone taking their child to the bus stop. Usually, my next door neighbor's daughter is parked there and is respectful to my flower garden but she was in her driveway today. I guess I'll have to put a landscaping timber out there and hope I don't trip over it when taking Sparky out there.

I took Sparky to the Vet yesterday afternoon. He had his brakes on all the way from the parking lot. He did not want to go in there. He had his annual exam and is doing well. He also had his nails and glands done and had an xray for his hip and knees. He has a little limp and looks like he is skipping when he trots. He's had this since I got him. Dr. Martin said to watch it and if it doesn't clear up then get an xray. Nothing showed up on the xray and the Vet, Dr. Beste, said it is a tendon or ligament injury that wouldn't show up. He is OK for now but will probably develop arthritis when he get older.

I got the name of my neighbor's groomer but the Arctic Vortex is coming again and he will need his fur. I can't wait until winter gives up it's grip and we can welcome spring.

reesensara.jpg

Reese and Sara of Australia and Panama stranded in Chesapeake City when their motor broke down and no mechanics here in the winter. They became iced in and my church and the community helped them with food and warm clothing. A lady from church lent them an electric space heater and the dock master got them some bubblers so they wouldn't have to chop the ice away from the boat every 4 hours for fear of crushing the hull. They have a sailboat but the canal doesn't allow sails to be put up.

They've been here for two weeks and planned to leave this morning for Rockhall, MD about an hour drive south of here. I guess they will stop there and wait out the next storm. There are a lot of fishermen at Rockhall so there should be a mechanic if they need one. Also gas. My pastor took them to the gas station to fill up 5 gallon cans as there is no gas available at the marina this time of year.

Sunday, February 23, 2014

I sang in the choir at the 9am service and then was able to practice with the praise band afterward. I sang the the Contemporary Service at 11am. The couple who was stranded in Chesapeake City attended. Though they claim not to be Christians, they were in awe of the love that poured out from our church and community. They said they will be leaving 5:30 am tomorrow.

It was great to see the grass and have the snow melted away from the driveway and patio. I see buds on the snowdrops. It was 60 degrees this afternoon. It will be short-lived as it's going down to 16 on Tuesday. We enjoy it while we can.

I took a container of Christmas flower decorations to the shed. It had a large pile of snow/ice piled in front of it. It was good to get it out of the kitchen.

My neighbor, Rex was sitting on his deck. He is running for county council and asked me to endorse him as a candidate by signing some paperwork. He also gave me the name and number of his dog groomer. He has a cute little dog named Barley. I think he is a Cairn Terrier. He and Sparky are friends. Barley whines when he sees Sparky and wants to greet him. He was also Danny Boy's friend.

I picked up some branches that came down with the storms.

My lunch and dinner were left over stuffed cabbage casserole from the lunch at the church yesterday. They had a lot left over and gave me a huge container to take home. I help out with the Kanal Kitchen. Once a month, we serve lunch for the homeless people and others in the community.

Still tired out from the stress and zumba workout so I rested the rest of the day.

I went to Walgreen's and Redner's Supermarket this morning to get some needed things. They had pretty yellow tulips that lit up the place. I didn't do much the rest of the day. I guess I was tired out from Zumba yesterday.

Remembering my Teddy Bear. He has been gone 7 years, today. It doesn't seem possible. I woke up thinking about him. One time we stopped in a Friendly's Restaurant in Pittsfield, MA. We ordered hambergers. They were served cut in half. Ted's was pink in the center and the look on his face was hysterical. He had his lip curled in a snarl. We were sitting a the counter and the waitress was standing in front of us. She said, "Is something wrong." I couldn't help but laugh at the expression on his face. I still laugh when I think of it.

Friday Flower Bloggin'

031313crocus.jpg

This was taken last March. I hope the flowers will pop through. The ground is saturated with water and melting snow. It's a big mud hole. Sparky get filthy when I take him out.

It is raining and the temp is 60 degrees. The snow is disappearing fast but there is still some of the big piles left and ice on the north side.

Friday, February 21, 2014

I had an early doctor appointment at 8:00. I got Sparky out at 6:30 so I could get ready and get there in time. It was a wellness appointment for Medicare. It went very well. When I got back, I decided to go to the new Zumba class for seniors at the church. The county was sponsoring it so it is free. It was a good workout which I needed. Things have been so stressful and tiring with the shoveling of snow, the finances at church, and the heater not working properly. Seems to be OK now. I walked Sparky afterward, had some lunch and was a couch potato for the rest of the day.

I went to lunch with my friend Dottie, and her sister, Annie and husband, Glenn, her sister-in-law, Edna, and her friends at Dottie's church in Brandywine, DE. We had a nice lunch and talked of old times. Edna taught Dottie, Rosie, and I to drive standard shift. It was back when not many cars were automatic. We also talked about going to the Chinese Restaurant in West Philadelphia. It was a favorite of both our families. We had fond memories of the restaurant but it is no longer there.

After lunch, I took my sewing machine to be repaired at a sewing center near Dotties church. It was a lovely store with yard goods, and notions. There are not many yard goods stores around anymore. They also had quilting classes and were knowledgeable about sewing.

Wednesday, February 19, 2014

I took Sparky out about 9:30 last night. When I came in, I said to myself it's nice and warm in here. I looked at the thermostat and it said 75. I thought that's not possible it's set on 70. The heater would not shut off even when I set the thermostat to off. The temp went up to 76. I sent a text to my neighbor and she sent her son over. He thinks the thermostat is defective. The heater isn't reading it. I just got a new one a few weeks ago. Robie turned off the master switch so I have no heat for the night. Good thing it's not that cold tonight. I can turn it on for awhile if I get cold. I have an electric blanket so I should be ok until I get a heater man in.

I'm waiting for the heater man now. He's supposed to come between 10 and 2. I had to reschedule my Doctor appt. and I can't go to Bible Study. I took Sparky out for a walk around 9:15. I heard this noise and thought it sounds like a freight train. We got back just in time before a downpour began.

Saturday was spent chopping out the ice that covered everything.

Sunday, I went to church, sang in the choir, helped with the counting of the offering and deposit, sang with the Praise Band at the contemporary service and helped with the offering and deposit after that service.

We have a couple stranded here in Chesapeake City. The man is from Australia and the woman is from France and South America. The bought a sailboat up in Maine and it broke down in Cape May. They got it fixed and it broke down again when they got here. All the mechanics are gone for the winter. They are at the town dock and had to chip away the ice every four hours. Finally, the dock master got them some bubblers. The people from the church and the Ecumenical Assoc have helped them with food and a space heater for the cabin of their boat. They came to church on Sunday, and after the service, the Australian said they needed a "Wash." Meaning a shower. Pastor Mark took them to his house so they could "wash" and to Walmart to get some minutes for their Trakphone. They road their tandem bike to Redner's to get some groceries. They must have been quite a chore because of the hills. I thought about taking my bike when I took my car to the garage for repairs but the hills and the bridge ended that thought. I waited in the garage waiting room for the repairs. I would take a book.

Monday, I cleaned. I haven't been cleaning because I have been tired out from all the shoveling. Sparky loves the snow but takes a deep sleep for a nap when he gets in.

It snowed again during the night. It looks like an inch or inch and a half. I was able to push it along the walk to get a path through it. Everyone is sick of the snow. It's going up to 40 today, in the 50's Wednesday and Thursday and in the 60's on Friday. Hopefully, it will clear out all this mess and left the flowers come up out of the ground.

Remembering my parents, Ruth and Rick on their Anniversary - February 14th.

RuthnRick.jpg

February used to be such a happy month. The 11th was my mother's birthday, the 14th was their anniversary, and my brother's birthday was at the end of the month. We used to go out to dinner for Moma's birthday and my parents anniversary. Sometimes the weather would be horrible as it is now. But on their 50th Anniversary, the weather was great about 60 degrees. We were concerned when making plans because of what the weather might be. We had a nice dinner at a nearby restaurant with family and friends. It was a wonderful time.

Thursday, February 13, 2014

I was awakened around 4am by the computer power surge beeping. It scared Sparky who was sleeping on the sofa in the livingroom. He came a running, jumped up on the bed and snuggled almost on my head. The power kept going on and off all morning. I looked outside and the deck was buried in 18 inches of snow. I went out to shovel the east side front entrance so I wouldn't have to lift the snow up over the rail on the deck. I saw the man across the street standing on top of his van shoveling the snow off. I don't know where he was going but he didn't get very far. I had to get a path shoveled so Sparky could get out. The snow was over his head.

When I did get him out, it had turned to rain and the ruts in the snow were filled with water. The power has been going on and off all morning and now in the afternoon. The cable is also out. After breakfast, I went out again and shoveled off the car and got the snow cleared so I could get out if I had to. No telling how long the power would be out. Bethel Road is clear but who knows when a plow will come in here. Snow removal from the road is supposed to be covered by our lot rent. lol.

I took Sparky out again and we had our lunch. I was going to relax and watch Gunsmoke but no cable. Sparky is sleeping after his exhausting venture outside. He rolled around in the snow getting soaking wet and causing his coat to come undone. What a mess. We now have two sets of wet clothes. I hope some dry before we have to go out again.

I did a load of wash and then off to the gas station and Redner's. I went right to the church for Bible Study as I didn't have time to go home and unload the groceries. When I did get home, I took Sparky out.

I had spaghetti for super with Italian bread. Redner's had a small loaf. When I was a kid, my next door neighbor, Mrs. DelloBuono, taught me to roll my spaghetti on my fork. I am amazed that my friends of Italian ancestry do not roll their spaghetti.

I am ready for the storm. It started around 8pm. At least, it was snowing when I took Sparky out. It was so fine, it was like mist. I could barely see it.

Tuesday, February 11, 2014

It was 10 degrees this morning. I can't believe how long this winter weather keeps hanging on.

Thinking of my mother today. It was her birthday.

I did some wash early this morning and took Sparky out before heading to the church to do some work on the computer. Next, I went to the library to return my DVD's and then to the bank.

I walked Sparky when I got back and then made a sandwich for lunch.

I have Choral Practice tonight and then need to prepare for the storm. They are predicting 9 to 14 inches. Good Grief! More snow on Sunday. Most of the country is experiencing this horrid winter.

Sunday, February 9, 2014

moma.jpg

In memory of my mother, Ruth.

February 11, 1913 to February 9, 1991

I went out early to walk Sparky and then I went off the church. I sang in the choir, helped with the offering, and went to sing with the Praise Band at the second service. There were 4 of us and some new band members. I ran all over the church to find another music stand and found one in the adult Sunday School class. They didn't need it so I took it.

I was not going to sing when there were enough young people to sing but some of the congregation wondered where I was last week so I guess I'll continue with it.

It is snowing again today. It never got above 29 degrees all day. It was 20 this morning and a red sky. I didn't have my camera so I didn't get a picture of it. I just started when I took Sparky out at 3pm. I guess I'll watch another one of the movies I got yesterday while I eat my dinner.

I got mad at Sparky. He is always pawing at my furniture, and bed when he goes to lay down. I scooted him off my grandmother's chair and then I found a rip in my best pillow case. I forgot to put it up this morning. He gets into a lot more trouble than Danny did. Danny would paw at the furniture but not as vigorously as Sparky.

Saturday, February 8, 2014

I did some errands early this morning as snow was predicted at noon. I got some movies at the Library because there was nothing I wanted to watch on TV tonight. When I got back, I put some things in the shed way back in the corner under the shelf. I wanted to get them out of my kitchen before the snow came. I was on my hands and knees and knocked a box over. I leaned out to pick it up and felt my back go out. I walked Sparky and had some lunch then called the Chiropractor. He said to come at 2pm. I hoped I could get there before the snow started but looked out the window and saw it was too late, it already started.

I looked like a blizzard by the time I got there but when I came out, it had stopped with no accumulation. I must have really done a job on my back because it was sore all afternoon and evenig.

Friday, February 7, 2014

I got up early and got Sparky out for his walk. At 9:00, I left for the Honda dealer to get my tags put on. They had to install a front bracket. Maryland has front and rear plates. The car came from PA so I guess they only have one.

On the way home, I stopped in Kmart up there and looked around without buying anything. I next stopped at the Shop-Rite and got some groceries. They had Klondyke Bars for $1.99. I should have stocked up but only got one.

Next, I stopped at the DVM to take my old tags back. I had to take a number and get in line. Good Grief. Last time, in NJ, I just drove up to the inspection station and handed them to the man.

I saw the heating people were at the church so I stopped there to see if they were finished installing the furnace. I talked with Tucker and he said they were finished but something wasn't right because the temp was still 47 degrees in the Sanctuary and it should be up to 60. I hope they get it straightened out or we will be having services in the social hall again. That is weather permitting. A snow storm is coming Saturday and Sunday. We are all sick of this winter weather.

Thursday, February 6, 2014

I went to the church to do some work before my exercise class. We did our exercise at 10:00 instead of 9:00 so that it would be warmer coming out and maybe the church would be warmer by then.

After exercise, we went to JoJo's and since it was after 11:00 I ordered a sandwich for lunch. I got the Reuben. It had a lot of meat and was large so I took half home for dinner.

I walked Sparky at 3pm and then got a shower when I got back. I ate my dinner and went to Band Practice. We practiced in the Social Hall. The heater company was putting in a new heater for the Sanctuary so hopefully, we can have church services in there. After Band, I had Choir practice. We ran overtime and I was anxious to get home and get Sparky out. I know he can hold out 5 hours but I don't like to let him go longer than that. I thought the director was never going to stop. She kept handing out new songs to sing.

When I got home, I took Spary out and watched the new series of Doc Martin. He is anti social and has the most horrible bedside manner that it is comical.

Wednesday, February 5, 2014

I looked out on the deck this morning and it was wet so I ventured out with Sparky. It was raining but a glaze of ice was on the steps, walkways and driveway. As I was walking past the driveway, I noticed the moon roof on the car was open. I wondered how that happened. I opened the car door and turned on the car as Sparky whined impatiently. I couldn't find the switch to close it. I got out the manual but didn't have my reading glasses with me. (I'll have to keep a pair in the car.) Even after looking at the manual, I couldn't find where in the world the switch was. It was not where it was in my old car. I got out and put Sparky in the back seat as he was getting wet in the rain. I got out another book that was with my manual and saw the switch was in between the interior lights. Then I remembered I had turned on the interior lights last night and heard a noise as if a window was closing. I thought "That's weird." and didn't give it another thought. I closed the moon roof and opened the sunshade. It did not seem to be wet but the top of the sun shade probably is. I'll have to open the moon roof when it gets sunny and warm out so it can dry. I hate when they change things around on cars. It is the same make and model as my old car. Why do they have to move things around so you have to consult the manual to figure out how to find the controls. Good Grief!

Tuesday, February 4, 2014

I got ready for exercise class and went to the church. None of the ladies were there so I did some work in the office. Tucker came in and said there was a Trustees meeting and wondered why my name was on his list for the meeting. I told him as Treasurer, I am a member of the committee.

He told me there is a meeting tomorrow night. I had to do more work to get my report ready for the meeting. The finance committee doesn't meet until next week so I thought I'd have more time to prepare my reports. Not!

The ladies came in at 10:00 and reminded me that we had changed the time because it was so cold at 9am. Anyway, I had too much work to do in the office so couldn't work out with them.

I didn't do much when I got home except for taking Sparky out and getting things ready for the Choral Society practice.

I dreaded going because an ice storm was coming to the area at 9pm and that's when we got out of practice. We looked outside at 8 to see if anything was happening and it wasn't. Luckily, the storm didn't come until about 11 so I got home safely.

I heard some horror stories about cars sliding down the Chesapeake City Bridge sideways when it is icy. Also, I live on a road that has many snake curves and no shoulder. Many a car has ended up in the ditch on each side of the road. One farmer is always having to replace his fence and the electric company has to replace its poles.

I awoke to rain on the roof. It was supposed to turn to snow. I put Sparky's raincoat on him and mine on me and we ventured out. When I got back, I had some breakfast and got ready for the Dentist. I went out the door to find the rain was mixed with snow. My check up was very good and the snow mix turned back to rain. I went to the bank and then to the church to take the deposit bags and receipts back. I looked up some information for my friend Tina and then came home. The rain turned back to snow while I was walking Sparky. The snow didn't last long, it turned back to a mix. I had slush on my deck, walks and driveway. There was an inch of rain in the rain gauge. It's a good thing it wasn't snow or we'd have a foot. My niece, Tina, lives in PA and she had 7.5 inches. There was a good deal of snow not to far north of here.

Sunday, February 2, 2014

The groundhog saw his shadow so we'll be having six more weeks of winter. We are having a bit of a thaw today. The glacier had mostly melted and I can see the ground for the first time in weeks. But... we need to get ready for the next one coming tomorrow. It is a nice day today but it is the calm before the storm.

The furnace at church is broken. We had church service in the social hall. I think there are two furnaces at the church. One for the Sanctuary and the other for the rest of the building which is newer. We did OK at the first service but the Contempary Service Band had to use guitars that were not electric. I don't know what they did for the overhead computer screen with the words to the songs. I didn't stay. They had plenty of singers.

It was Souper Sunday at church today. We do a fund raiser selling soup and this year, subs. We do this every Superbowl Sunday. When I got home with mine, I had them in my tote bad and I put the tote and my pocket book on the chair and went into the bathroom. When I came out, I wondered what Sparky was chewing on. I realized it was my sub. He had gotten into the tote, and into the plastic bad and bit through the paper and took a bit out of my sub. Good thing it was on the end so I could cut it off. Sometimes I can see why he ended up in the pound. What a mess he can be.

I tried downloading my pictures from my phone but have problems doing it. Now they are gone from my phone and only one uploaded into the computer. What a pain. I will just have to break down and get a new computer so I can download the photos from my camera. I could do it on this laptop but I'm afraid I'll run out of space. I also don't know what happened to the photos I took of the bridge in the early morning sun. They are just gone.

My friend, Dottie, came for a visit today. It was good to see her. She brought some homemade soup that her daughter made so we had it for our lunch. It was excellent. It is so nice to have friends visit. We hadn't seen each other over the holidays so we had gifts to exchange. I gave her a gift certificate to Olive Garden and a package of chocolate covered pretzels from a candy shop. The candy is a fundraiser for the Choral Society and the chocolate is excellent.

Dottie gave me a plaque that reads, "A friend is someone who reaches for your hand and touches your heart." She also gave me a large container of goodies and some of her famous homemade banana bread.

She went with me when I walked Sparky and I introduced her to some of my neighbors who were outside enjoying the sunshine and shoveling some remaining snow before the next storm.

After dinner, I watched several mysteries that were on PBS - Sherlock Holmes, and the new Sherlock. DCI Banks was on but I had seen it before.

I went to the church to do some bills and then home to walk Sparky and have some lunch. Then, I went to the Acme for some groceries. They had a lot of 10 for 10 items especially things I use.

I also went to Redner's for some large bottles of water and Newman's cannned dog food. They raised the price on the small cans but the large cans are still the same. I don't know how long that will last but I'll get them a long as I can. Wal-mart also has it but it cost more.

I settled in for a night of mysteries.
